FAQs

What areas do you work in?

Chilton + Mayne Architecture works throughout Mid Canterbury, Canterbury, the South Island, and across New Zealand depending on the project. While we are based in Ashburton, we regularly work in locations such as Christchurch, Wānaka, Queenstown, Timaru, and rural Canterbury.

What makes Chilton + Mayne Architecture different?

We focus on creating timeless architecture that feels both practical and refined. Every project is tailored specifically to the site, environment, budget, and lifestyle of the client. We place a strong emphasis on communication, realistic construction outcomes, and creating spaces that feel great to live and work in.

How much do architectural fees cost?

Every project is different, so fees vary depending on size, complexity, and scope. We provide clear fee estimates at the beginning of the project so clients understand what is included before work starts.

Can you work to a budget?

Yes. Establishing a realistic budget early is one of the most important parts of the design process. We work closely with clients, builders, and quantity surveyors where needed to help align the design with the construction budget.

Can you help with difficult or sloping sites?

Yes, we regularly work with sites that require careful consideration of levels, access, orientation, and council requirements.

Do you work on subdivisions or multi-unit developments?

Yes, we have experience designing residential developments and coordinating documentation for more complex projects.

Can you help maximise site potential?

We work closely with clients to balance site opportunities, planning requirements, functionality, and long-term value.

Do I need a builder before starting design?

No. Many clients engage us before selecting a builder. However, if you already have a preferred builder, we are happy to collaborate with them early in the process.

Can you recommend builders and consultants?

Yes. Over many years in the industry we have built strong working relationships with trusted builders, engineers, surveyors, planners, and interior designers throughout New Zealand.

How long does the design and consent process take?

Timeframes vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, council requirements, and consultant input. As a general guide:

  • Concept Design: 4–8 weeks
  • Developed Design & Documentation: 6–12 weeks
  • Council Consent: Typically 20 working days once lodged

How do we get started?

The best place to start is with an initial conversation. We can discuss your project, site, ideas, timeframe, and budget, and outline the best next steps moving forward.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

It’s helpful to bring:

  • Site information or property details
  • Inspiration images or ideas
  • A rough budget
  • A wish list of spaces and requirements
  • Any existing plans or reports you may already have

How involved will I be in the process?

As involved as you would like to be. Some clients prefer to be heavily involved in every decision, while others prefer us to guide the process more closely. Good communication and collaboration are important throughout the project.

Can you stay involved during construction?

Yes. We can remain involved during construction to answer questions, review details, undertake site observations, and help ensure the design intent is carried through to completion.

Do you work with builders during construction?

Yes, we can assist during construction by answering queries, reviewing documentation, and helping maintain design intent throughout the build.

Do you prepare building consent application documentation?

Yes, we prepare the full building consent application documentation, lodge the application on your behalf, and manage the consent process through to approval. We act as your representative with Council throughout the building consent process, including responding to any Requests for Information (RFIs) that may arise.

What makes a successful project?

A successful project is built on clear communication, thoughtful planning, realistic budgeting, and strong collaboration between the client, consultants, and builder. Establishing clear expectations early and maintaining open communication throughout the process helps ensure the project is delivered efficiently and achieves the desired outcome.
